It’s reported a significant number of innocent people had their phones tapped by Gardaí.

The allegation was made by a former Garda intelligence officer – who says it happened from the late nineties to early noughties.

Today’s Irish Independent reports the ex-Garda made allegations that strict protocols for placing wire taps were sometimes ignored.

Political reporter with the Irish Independent Niall O’Connor wrote the story.

He says this case centres upon a particular officer who was a senior figure in that department.

In court documents he said that over a period of 9 or 10 years innocent people got caught up in wire taps.
