Sharapova makes winning Grand Slam comeback

Maria Sharapova marked her return to grand slam tennis by knocking out second seed Simona Halep at the US Open.

The 2006 champion broke down in tears shortly after wrapping up a 6-4 4-6 6-3 win.

She’s been handed a wild card in order for her to compete in her first major since returning to the sport from a drugs ban.
Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal both enter the fray at the US Open today.

Nadal is the top seed in Flushing Meadow this year, and faces Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic on the Arthur Ashe Court later.

Federer faces the American, Frances Tiafoe.

Women’s top seed Karolina Pliskova opens up proceedings on Arthur Ashe – taking on Magda Linette of Poland.

While Angelique Kerber faces Naomi Osaka.
