Two Tipperary projects are included in funding under the latest tranche of the EU Just Transition Fund.
Carrick on Suir is earmarked for over €1.6 million while Thurles gets in excess of €1.2 million from a national total of €84.5 million.
The EU Just Transition Fund START Scheme is co-funded by the Government and the European Union.
Ireland is set to receive up to €84.5 million from the fund over the period to 2027. With the Government’s matched funding using Exchequer resources, up to €169 million will be available.
One of Tipperary projects to benefit is the Thurles Renewable Thermal Energy Infrastructure Project which receives €1.23 million which has been welcomed by Fianna Fáil Deputy Ryan O’Meara.
This will be used to fund renewable thermal energy and energy efficiency upgrades for Thurles Leisure Centre, The Source Arts Centre, and Thurles Library.
This includes the installation of biomass and heat pump technologies, PV generation for on-site use and upgraded district heating infrastructure.
Fine Gael’s Michael Murphy says the €1.65 million for the Carrick-on-Suir Riverside Rehabilitation and Revitalisation Project will benefit a long-derelict riverside brownfield site in the town.
This will include the removal of asbestos and other hazardous materials, demolition of unsafe structures, treatment of invasive species and remediation of contaminated ground.
