The Government is being urged to back new legislation to tackle sexually abusive images created using artificial intelligence.
Labour’s Justice spokesperson and Tipp TD Alan Kelly says his Bill which comes before the Dáil today would make it a criminal offence to generate or alter sexual images without consent, for publication or distribution.
He says nine months after the controversy surrounding Elon Musk’s Grok AI tool, the Government has failed to close the gaps in the law.
Deputy Kelly the proposals would also hold technology companies accountable for facilitating the abuse.
“The way in which they’re allowing such abuse – such AI generated abuse as well – to harm people.
“What I’m bringing forward will define what is abuse and ensure that AI generated images and videos are covered.
“But furthermore, really, it deals with e-commerce companies and their executives. It’s pointless allowing theses companies to just be fined – the directors behind these companies need to be held criminally liable.”
