Blood donors are needed at clinics in Thurles this week as stocks remain low.
The Irish Blood Transfusion Service has a Pre-Amber Alert in place due to critically low stocks of RhD Negative blood, particularly O Negative, which is essential in emergency situations and for patients with specific medical needs.
Demand for blood in Irish hospitals continues to rise year on year, with almost 31,000 units of blood issued to hospitals over the past thirteen weeks.
Current blood stocks remain under significant pressure, with just 1.7 days’ supply of O Negative, 1.5 days’ supply of AB Negative, and 2.8 days’ supply of B Negative available. The average stock level across all blood groups currently stands at 3.9 days.
The IBTS is urging both existing donors and anyone considering donating for the first time to attend the upcoming clinics in Thurles. Every donation can make a vital difference in helping to ensure patients continue to receive the lifesaving blood they need. All blood types are needed.
