A Tipperary doctor has conducted a study, which has revealed that
GPs are not following regulations covering the storage of powerful
pain-killing drugs.

Drugs such as morphine should be kept in a locked store by GPs,
who must also maintain a controlled drug register.

A survey of 119 GPs in the western region showed only 28.9pc are
keeping the register and 67.9pc are storing drugs in a locked store.

The doctors from Tipperary and Limerick who carried out the study
wrote in the 'Irish Medical Journal that Doctors were more likely to store
controlled drugs in their surgery if they were in a rural setting.
