A Fine Gael T.D. has asked the Environment Minister to make funding available
for people who may not be able to afford improvement works to their septic tanks.

Deputy Noel Coonan pointed out that people could now avail of the low registration fee
of €5 but when the tanks are registered and inspections begin,
there could be many people who can't afford an upgrade.

The risk-based system of inspections will begin next year and will be objective
and evidence-based, according to the Minister Phil Hogan.

However, he still stops short of giving a commitment on grant-aid.

Deputy Coonan, says he'll continue to fight for such a scheme.
