Victory for Joseph O’Brien in Melbourne Cup

Joseph O’Brien has denied his father Aidan a first victory in the Emirates Melbourne Cup, in a remarkable result for the Irish in Australia.

The 24-year-old Tipperary based trainer, who only started his career as a trainer 18 months ago, saw his horse ‘Rekindling’ out-battle ‘Johannes Vermeer’ who is trained by his father Aidan.

Incredibly, Ireland claimed the first three places in the country’s most famous race with the Willie Mullins-trained ‘Max Dynamite’ finishing third, having taken second place two years ago.
