He has been a key member of the Premier set-up for over a decade and this season helped the county gain promotion to Division 3 as well as Championship wins over Limerick and Laois.

Speaking to Tipp FM the Fethard clubman said it was the right time to step aside with football in the county on a high.

Among those paying tribute to the 37 year old was former Tipp star Declan Browne who described Fitzgerald as a great role model for any future Tipperary players.
