The reigning champion suffered a surprise straight sets defeat to Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals, losing 7-5 6-3 6-love.

Thiem will meet Rafa Nadal for a place in this year’s final, after the nine time champion played just one set in his last eight tie with Pablo Carreno Busta before his opponent retired injured.

In the other quarter-finals this afternoon, top seed Andy Murray meets Kei Nishikori and reigning US Open champion Stan Wawrinka meets Marin Cilic.

There are also two women’s quarter-finals to be decided.

Second seed Karolina Pliskova takes on Caroline Garcia of France, while third seed Simona Halep is up against fifth seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.
