Thurles Sarsfields hopes of Munster club championship glory have ended in defeat at the quarter-final stage.

Extra time was needed to separate Sars and Waterford Champions Ballygunner in their clash at Walsh Park.

The Tipp champions never controlled the game and only led for brief periods.

They trailed 1-8 to 0-8 points at half time with a long range Pauric Mahony goal the difference at the interval.

A Conor Stakelum goal put Sars in front midway through the second half but it eventually finished all square at the end of normal time.

It was edge of the seat stuff for the 2,864 spectators at Walsh Park during 20 minutes of extra time.

Ballygunner proved strongest and despite the best efforts of Thurles Sarsfields ended the game 1-21 to 1-19 winners.

Afterwards Sars Coach Paddy McCormack said the team were naturally disappointed with the result.
