The Irish track cycling squad begin their Olympic campaign this afternoon.
The women’s pursuit team take to the boards at around 4.30.
Ireland has achieved considerable success in track cycling in recent years despite not having an indoor velodrome. This looks set to be rectified with confirmation last week that the project is going to tender.
Former national cycling coach and twice Olympic team manager Martin O’Loughlin from Carrick on Suir says when complete in 2027 not only will it mean cyclists won’t have to travel abroad to train it will also give people here an opportunity to see a very spectacular sport up close.
“Well its action packed. A lot can happen – if any of you want to watch the Madison (at the Olympics) you’re guaranteed crashes, there’ll be a lot of action.
“The races are fast, they’re furious and they’re really good to watch.”
