The Tipperary and Munster champions have missed out on a place in the All-Ireland Club Football Championship Final after Ballyboden St Enda's of Dublin defeated 0-15 to 0-10 after extra-time.
Commercials started the match, which was played at O'Moore Park in Portlaoise, in positive fashion and by the break were 0-5 to 0-4 up on their much-fancied opponents.
Kevin Harney, Jack Kennedy, captain Kevin Harney, Michael Quinlivan and Ian Barnes pointed for them in the opening 30 minutes.
They were similarly impressive for much of the second period.
With around five minutes left to play Commercials led by three points – Barnes and Kennedy added to their earlier scores with Michael Quinlivan and Jason Lonergan (0-2) also contributing to what looked increasingly like a winning lead.
The Tipp side's cause seemed to have been further assisted by the dismissal, following a straight red card, of Ballyboden midfielder Declan O'Mahoney.
However, they couldn't capitalise on their numerical advantage and the Dublin club pegged back Commercials' lead with three late points, including the equaliser from Darragh Nelson.
This meant there'd be extra-time to decide who'd be going to Croke Park on St Patrick's Day.
Charlie McGeever's team never really recovered their earlier momentum and also suffered the blow of losing Michael Quinlivan, who was black-carded during the additional period of play.
Ballyboden scored 0-5 without reply in extra-time to set up a meeting with Castlebar Mitchels in the final.
