Manuel Pellegrini's side are fourth but just one point ahead of West Ham and Manchester United after yesterday's derby loss to the Reds at the Etihad.
Pellegrini is being replaced by Pep Guardiola in the summer and former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson says he expects major changes at the club.
