Ireland’s Thomas Barr has been forced to withdraw from tonight’s 400-metres hurdles semi-final at the World Athletics Championships.

The Waterford man, who was fourth at the Olympics last summer, has picked up to a vomiting bug.

Barr says it’s ‘beyond disappointing’ to miss the semi as his whole year had been focused on the Worlds.

Brian Gregan’s World Athletics Championships campaign has also drawn to a close with the Irish athlete exiting the men’s 400 metres at the semi-final stage.

It was certainly an expected result in terms of the seeding, but Gregan still clocked one of the fastest times of his life, and also beat former world and Olympic champion LaShawn Merritt in bowing out.
