It wasn’t to be for Sharlene Mawdsley and the Ireland mixed relay team last night.
The Newport AC sprinter was representing Ireland in the Mixed 4x400m relay final at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.
The Tipp woman had an uphill battle as she received the baton for the anchor leg in last place but closed the gap significantly with the fastest women’s split of 49.93, eventually finishing in 5th place in a time of 3 minutes 17.63 seconds alongside her teammates 17 year old Conor Kelly, Phil Healy and Marcus Lawler.
That time was exactly two seconds behind the Netherlands who took gold thanks to a strong final leg from Femke Bol.
Last night’s race sets up a busy weekend for Mawdsley who will be competing in the individual 400m heats this morning at approximately 11.15am Irish time and Sunday’s women’s 4x400m relay final.
