The first video – an 18-second clip of co-founder Jawed Karim at the elephant enclosure at San Diego Zoo – was uploaded in April 2005, but it wasn't until May that year that the site was opened up to others.
The three-man start-up now has more than a billion users, and is the third most visited site in the world.
