Mara was well known for his work with Fianna Fáil – including managing the party to three general election victories.
PJ Mara was first known to many through Dermot Morgan's portrayal as Charlie Haughey's henchman on Scrap Saturday.
But that portrayal only scratched the surface of his contribution to Haughey and Fianna Fáil.
He joined as its press secretary in 1983 – and after four years work helped guide the party back into power in 87, then becoming government press secretary.
But despite his skills with the 'black arts' he was well regarded and well liked on all sides.
Former Fianna Fail Minister and Tipperary TD Michael Smith says his talents were 'extraordinary' while Martin Mansergh, who served as a special senior advisor to Charlie Haughey, says he has fond memories of him
Mara stepped down in 1992 but returned as Fianna Fáil director of elections three times – each of which resulted in Bertie Ahern becoming Taoiseach.
He is survived by his partner and two children.
