It was forced out of the free education system as agreement could not be reached with the Department of Education over what it could charge pupils.

It's fees for both boarding and day students was above the limits imposed under the free education scheme.

School authorities had been in discussion with the Department of Education for a number of years in a bid to resolve the issue.

However agreement could not be reached so Rockwell has now decided to change to a fee paying status.

Former Rockwell students include Bank of Ireland boss Richie Boucher, former President Patrick Hillery and former Munster and Ireland rugby star Denis Leamy.
