Comments by a local TD criticising the efforts of Tipperary County Council during last week’s snow and ice have come under fire.

Deputy Mattie McGrath criticised the local authority saying there were too many Chiefs and not enough Indians in the council.

The response to the extreme weather event was discussed at length during yesterday’s monthly meeting of the County Council.

Fine Gael representative Mary Hanna Hourigan says Mattie McGrath’s criticism was uncalled for.

“Everybody did their level best and went above and beyond the call of duty. It started Saturday night/Sunday. It was a long week and continued into Friday.

“Like if you’re working in those conditions and you are out there doing your level best and you hear it yourself on your local radio – people criticising you or one person criticising you – that’s not great for your morale.

“You know you’re trying to do your best and keep going so I was personally very annoyed. How dare anybody criticise.”
