With a cold snap forecast over the coming days Tipperary County Council is well prepared to treat roads as necessary.
The Council is responsible for the maintenance of 5,500 kilometres of roads in Tipp.
1,100 kilometres of these will be salted if deemed necessary by the local authority while the motorway network is the responsibility of Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
Executive Engineer with Tipperary County Council Tim Murphy outlines their strategy.
“Our priority routes are the National Primary Roads which come to 70 kilometres, there’s 150 kilometres of National Secondary Roads and just over 900 kilometres of Regional Roads. Included there also is about 60 kilometres of Local Roads which will be linking these priority roads on the route.
“The road temperatures are recorded through a set of sensors distributed around the county that detect the road temperature – the road state – this predicts what the temperature will be for the following 24 hours.”
Temperatures will remain low throughout the day across the Premier County.
However there are warnings it will plummet tonight leading to possibly icy and dangerous conditions on untreated roads.
On Tipp Today earlier Cathal Nolan of Irelands Weather Channel outlined what to expect.
“Temperatures will fall away again after dark getting very cold tonight in parts of the county – down as low as minus 5 degrees Celsius in some areas. So for motorists certainly be aware of that – there is an ongoing risk of icy patches especially on the untreated rural road surfaces.
“Then over the course of the next couple of days – tomorrow another very bright day with good sunshine. Feeling very cold again with frost really lingering in some areas throughout the course of the day.”
