A Status Orange low temperature and ice warning has been issued for Tipperary and twenty one other counties tonight.
It’s due to come into effect at 8pm until 10 on Wednesday morning and temperatures could drop to minus 8 in some areas.
Another similar warning then comes into effect at 6pm tomorrow, until 11am on Thursday.
Tipperary County Council have been using all services at their disposal during the current extreme weather conditions.
Last weekend’s significant snowfall has been replaced by sub-zero temperatures leading to poor conditions on roads and footpaths.
All road staff have been redirected to focus solely on keeping routes clear.
Salting crews were out at 2am this morning with a second run carried out at 9.30 and another scheduled for later today.
Senior Engineer James Murray says their Winter Service Plan has been in operation since Saturday.
“All of the units were fitted with snow ploughs and there was a significant amount of the network had to be ploughed – in fact if we didn’t have the snow ploughs all routes would really have been closed. We would be very happy with the performance of the Winter Service Plan – it was very, very challenging. Over Sunday we would have covered that 1,200 kilometre route four times so you’re talking about covering 4,500 kilometres of road network in very difficult conditions.”
The R503 between Nenagh and Newport is closed due to the road conditions while the road from Clogheen over the Vee is also impassable.
Local Authority crews are working to clear footpaths in town centres across Tipperary today
Most footpaths are extremely dangerous due to ice and snow.
The Civil Defence have also been called into action to help with some services.
James Murray says the council is working at full capacity on a number of fronts.
“Away from the salting we’re concentrating on town centre footpaths and there was work done yesterday and our crews are working at that today as well. We’re concentrating on trying to get access to public services and other services.
“The Civil Defence in Clonmel are assisting with the transfer of nurses from the Minella Hotel to the hospital – critical care nurses have been put up overnight and we’re assisting in that transfer.
“Our fire services and rescue services have been in action.”
