The Independent TD has praised the efforts of emergency workers in dealing with Storm Éowyn but has criticised what he describes as the ‘reactive’ government approach.
He will be meeting with Taoiseach Micheál Martin today when he will propose proactive solutions for rural Ireland.
The Regional Independent group member wants the coalition to allow people to cut turf and install stoves and chimneys for solid fuel in all homes, including new builds during times when the electricity supply is out.
He is calling for the establishment of community response hubs, potentially utilizing GAA clubs and community centres as well as considering the provision of solar batteries and medium-sized generators to vulnerable households and businesses.
