Another status orange low temperature and ice warning has been issued for Tipperary from 7 this evening until 8am tomorrow.
Freezing fog is reported on some routes in Tipperary with the possibility of black ice in all areas even on roads that have been salted.
Tipperary County Council’s outdoor staff and road crews have been going above and beyond in their efforts to keep the major routes across the county clear during this extreme weather event.
1,100 kilometres of Primary, Secondary and Regional roads are being salted three times a day at the moment while they have also been clearing footpaths in urban areas in recent days.
Senior Engineer with the local authority James Murray says they are conscious of the effort being put in.
“We have staff – particularly drivers – who have done very long hours since Saturday. Some of our drivers would have done multiple routes on Saturday. We have two teams on a rota at the moment.
“Obviously as you go through the week people get tired and we have to try and be careful of that too with regards to putting people on the road.
“The routes are taking 4½ to 5 hours to cover when they should take 3 hours and that is an indication of the still poor conditions that are out there.”
