It happened at about five past five when he was seen going into the river from the new Suir bridge on the city bypass.
A search operation immediately began, involving all the emergency services and local volunteer river rescue groups, as well as the Waterford based Coastguard helicopter.

Gardai in Waterford are appealing to anyone who was travelling on the bypass or bridge at around 5 o'clock yesterday evening and who saw anything to contact them.
