The Bank says the job losses had previously been announced as part of a larger programme of restructuring.

The company says it is hopeful they can make the cuts through voluntary redundancies.

Gareth Murphy from the Financial Services Union represents workers impacted by today's announcement.

He says staff were called into meetings this morning to be told and are finding it hard to process the news.

Meanwhile the Housing Minister says he was unhappy that Ulster Bank didn't tell him it was planning to sell distressed home loans.

The bank announced yesterday it's selling 900 owner occupier mortgages in long-term arrears, leaving them open to evictions.

Minister Simon Coveney says the Government has a duty of care to the home-owners.
