Carrick on Suir will be a hive of activity in September as the town which many view as the home of Irish cycling has been selected as the location for the 2025 L’Étape Ireland in association with the Tour de France.
Killarney hosted the event last year where close on 2,000 cyclists took part.
Martin O’Loughlin from the Panduit Carrick Wheelers club says the towns rich history in cycling was one of the key
“L’Étape is a mass participation cycling event licensed by the organisers of the Tour de France. It started a number of years ago by allowing people to ride a full stage of the Tour de France and has now developed into 13 events all over Europe and they’ve recently held a successful one in Dubai.
“Carrick on Suir was the obvious choice I think due to the long history of cycling in the town and the successes of Sean Kelly and Sam Bennett plus all the local amateur champions over the years.”
