The biggest ever scientific study of fish stocks in Lough Derg has been completed, in what could an important development for the local area.

The Lough Derg Native Fish Biodiversity Project saw local anglers and clubs collecting over 2,000 samples that were analysed at universities in Belfast and Canada.

Freshwater biologist Dr Fran Igoe will present the findings at a event at the Lakeside Hotel in Killaloe at 7.30pm on Wednesday evening.

It’ll be used to manage stocks in the lake and its rivers and to maintain the area as a top class game fishery.

Joe O’Donoghue from the Lough Derg Anglers Association says things have been declining in recent years but there’s huge possibilities for future development based on this study.

Mr O’Donoghue says there’s huge potential for course fishing competitions which would be a massive boost for the local tourism industry.
