Efforts to revive the Irish sugar beet industry were discussed in Brussels yesterday with Tipperary still being proposed as a likely base.
Fine Gael MEP for Ireland South, Sean Kelly supported Beet Ireland's bid to garner support as they held talks with high level policy makers in the European Parliament.
Earlier this year Sean Kelly and fellow MEP Jim Higgins tabled key amendments to the CAP reform proposals designed to enable the revival of the Irish sugar beet industry. This amendment is now being progressed through Parliament.
Sean Kelly says under the right circumstances, the Irish sugar beet industry could be harvesting and processing by 2015, with indications that a facility could be developed at Lisheen in mid-Tipperary.
It's also estimated that the industry could provide employment for over 4,000 people.
