A report in todays Irish Examiner says frustration may be to blame for nearly 200 social welfare staff members across the country being attacked while doing their job over the past two years.

Among the incidents recorded at the Clonmel Social Welfare Office were a man entering the office – canteen in November 2012 while it was closed to members of the public. Security was called and the man left the building.

In February of last year an employee was threatened with violence by a client who said she was going to punch her head in.

Last September an employee of the Clonmel office was threatened by a client in the car park.

The Irish Examiner reports staff at other centres have faced death threats, knife attacks, physical assaults and verbal abuse.

Some of the most serious attacks have happened at the Navan Road social protection office – as well as in Tallaght in Dublin where one member of the public had their neck slashed.
