Tipperary site among top free visitor attractions in Ireland.

Holy Cross Abbey is among the most visited free attractions in Ireland.

New figures from Failte Ireland show that the Abbey attracted 240,000 visitors during 2011.

The leading free attraction was the National Gallery with nearly 623,000 visitors.

However paid attractions are proving far more popular with visitors – the most visited last year was the Guinness Storehouse with just over a million people passing through its doors.

This was closely followed by Dublin Zoo which also topped the one million mark.

Visitor numbers at The Rock of Cashel rose to 233,038 last year – an increase of 14% which no doubt can be put down in part to the visit of Queen Elizabeth II.
