Tipperary Town has shown a marked improvement in the latest Irish Business Against Litter survey.
The town was rated as moderately littered in the first report for 2014 – the end of year report shows that it is now “Clean to European Norms”.
For its part Clonmel has retained its status as “Cleaner than European norms” and is ranked 9th overall.
Over half of the sites surveyed in Tipp Town got the top litter grade and the remainder were moderately littered.
It is ranked 24th of the 40 towns and cities taking part in the IBAL league.
Brian Rafferty of the Tipperary Tidy Towns Committee says a combined effort between locals and the County Council has paid off.
Conor Horgan, spokesperson for IBAL, says some areas have made a great effort.
“Tipperary and Portlaoise in particular – they had been toward the foot of the table for a number of years, but they've come on strongly” he said.
“It's down to the efforts of the council; Tipperary…were on to our office several times inquiring about when the next survey would happen and so forth, and how they should solve the problem”.
“It really comes down to the council giving this top priority” he added.
Kilkenny topped the Irish Business Against Litter league for the third year in a row.
