Tipperary based Senator Denis Landy has called on the Government to ensure that plans to develop a national Alzheimer’s strategy are in place by the end of 2013.
The Labour representative was speaking on his party's motion in the Seanad which was agreed by all Parties in the Seanad.
The coalition has included a commitment to bring forward the strategy to deal with dementia at national level in the Programme for Government.
According to Senator Landy the cost of dealing with Alzheimer's in this country is almost €1.7 million per year including the work of both families and residential care.
He also says it's vital that a major public awareness campaign be an integral part of the strategy so that early dementia can be recognised.
