Motorists can decide what speed to use when driving on narrow country lanes from today.

Transport Minister Paschal Donoghue is introducing a new rural road sign, which is a white circle with a black diagonal stripe.

It means drivers can use their own judgement in deciding what speed to drive at – though it must be below the limit for the area.

Councillor Jackie Cahill – who is chairman of Tipperary County Councils Roads Special Policy Committee – says many local roads are just not suitable for the current speed limit.

Residents in towns and villages across Tipperary are being encouraged have their say on speed limits in their area.

New “urban slow zones” are also being introduced in residential areas with 30 kilometre an hour speed limits.

Councillor Jackie Cahill says a full review of speed limits will be undertaken across the county with members of the public having an opportunity to make submissions.
