Richard Haass – who is involved in talks in Northern Ireland at present – is included in a short list of nominees for the 2013 Tipperary International Peace Award.
The US diplomat is joined by the International Peace Bureau which is dedicated to the vision of a world without war.
Also shortlisted is Sister Mary Tarcisa Lokot who is widely known for her work to rebuild peace in war-torn Northern Uganda.
Dr. Lee Kyu Hyung from Korea is also nominated – he is a founder of the Taekwondo Peace Corps – a group which travels the world to promote peace through the martial art.
The 5th and final nominee is Pope Francis who is noted for his humility and his concern for the poor.
The Tipperary Peace Convention will announce the winner in the coming days and the award will be presented in Tipperary on a date to be confirmed in 2014.
Previous recipients of the Tipperary International Peace Award include former South African President the late Nelson Mandela while the 2012 recipient was Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai.
