Prison authorities and Gardaí are investigating the death after 25 year old Jason Morrissey from Toomevara – who was serving a lengthy sentence for an unprovoked fatal attack- was found dead in his cell after a suspected over dose.
Last year Jason Morrissey of 2 Church Street, Toomevara was jailed for 18 years for the unlawful killing of 25 year old James Tynan on Liberty Square Thurles in 2012.
Earlier this year that sentence was reduced on appeal.
The victim who was unknown to Morrissey was standing outside a hotel when the Toomevara man ran towards him and struck him in the face.
The Kilkenny man hit his head off the concrete pavement suffering serious head injury and died the following evening.
In the early hours of this morning the body of Jason Morrissey was discovered in his cell in Limerick prison.
It's thought he suffered a drugs overdose and efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
He is the second prison inmate to be found dead in his cell in the past 48 hrs following another incident at Wheatfield
Gardaí and the Prison Authorities have launched separate investigations into the deaths.
