John Paul Buck from Heywood Close in Clonmel is serving a life sentence for the stabbing to death of Fergus Roche in a vacant house in the town in October of 2005.

The Court of Criminal Appeal has heard that an alleged confession by John Paul Buck should not have been admitted in evidence at his trial.

The 34 year old was found guilty stabbing Fergus Roche to death while he slept in a disused house on the estate and then setting fire to the property on October 1st, 2005.

John Paul Bucks legal team say there are a number of grounds for the appeal including the alleged confession made by him to a member of the Gardai.

It's also claimed that media coverage of an attempted escape from Limerick Prison by the applicants brother Anthony Buck – himself a convicted murderer – on the second day of the jury's deliberations could have influenced their decision.

Mr Michael Delaney SC said given the unusual surname and the Clonmel link that “no one hearing that coverage and being involved in the trial” could have helped but ask if there was a connection between the two men.

The appeal hearing is to continue within the next two to three weeks.
