Tipperary grandmother prepared to face jail rather than pay Household Charge

With just days to go to the deadline to sign up for the household charge an 81 year old Tipperary native is vowing to go to jail before she will pay the €100 levy.

Mai Fitzgerald is originally from Lattin-Cullen – she moved to Limerick in the 1960's.

It's reported today the grandmother of nine has no problems with going to jail as long as she can get Mass in the morning, the papers and a few good books.

According to figures compiled by the Irish Independent, over 1.2 million people have still to register.

That breaks down to an average of nearly 9 thousand an hour, by close of business next Saturday.

Social Protection Minister Joan Burton yesterday described the deadline as 'ambitious' – however the government's already insisted there won't be any extension.
