Tipperary farmers benefited to the tune of €100 million from the Common Agricultural Policy in 2011.

That's according to Mairead McGuinness, Fine Gael MEP and member of the European Parliament’s Agricultural Committee.

She told farmers in Clonmel that political negotiations on the EU budget post 2014 are only starting.

The MEP said a positive outcome for agriculture would be the retention of the current agricultural budget and that Ireland hold onto its share of that budget. However, she said this is by no means certain.

She advised farmers in Tipperary to stay involved in the debate at every level.
