A Tipperary Councillor is calling on the Government to allow homeowners to install their own water meters.

North Tipp Fianna Fail Councillor John Carroll says every household may be facing a bill of up to €800 for the installation of water meters, and so should be given the option of installing them themselves.

He says that while the Government is promising no up front charge, it doesn't hide the fact that people will still be forced to pay for the installation of meters, on top of paying for water.

Councillor Carroll says local suppliers have quoted him just 100 euro for the meter itself.

He has also asked for clarification on whether newer homes with meters, will still be forced to pay €800.
