Oculer has come up with a ground breaking system which will detect bacteria which can spoil milk much quicker than current testing methods.
Their new system for testing bacteria in milk will revolutionise the dairy processing sector with a subsequent benefit to dairy farmers…..its set to save the dairy industry here up to €200 million.
Thermoduric Bacteria is bacteria which survives the pasteurisation process which is typical within a dairy environment.
Up to now the test for Thermoduric Bacteria took 72 hours – this new system will cut that to 24 hours.
CEO of Oculer Brian Byrne says the technology will be a huge benefit for dairy processers and by implication for the farmers who supply them with milk.
The new system will also allow processers to trace the source of the bacteria and inform farmers whether it's from the milking system or from the animals.
This will make it easier for farmers to resolve the issue and save themselves costly penalties.
Brian Byrne says the Oculer system has already attracted significant international attention from as far afield as New Zealand.
Over 20 jobs will be created by Oculer which is based on the shores of Lough Derg at Fort Henry Business Park in Ballina.
In the next 12 to 18 months they will be recruiting will be in the areas of Research & Development, sales & distribution, technical support and admin.
