An attempt by a Tipperary based hospital consultant to reach the North Pole on foot has ended in failure.

Everest summiteer Dr. Clare O’Leary together with Kerry man Mike O’Shea was forced to abandon the efforts over the weekend.

Apparently they were left with no option but to turn back after plans to share air delivery of food supplies fell through.

They would have faced a bill of up to €180,000 for the air-drop had they continued.

Dr O'Leary is a specialist in gastroenterology at South Tipp General – she has already made two other attempts to reach the North Pole on foot.

She has also climbed the world’s seven highest peaks and reached the South Pole.
