A Tipperary woman is included in the commission tasked to carry out a root and branch review of the Gardaí.

The 12 member group will be chaired by Seattle police Chief Kathleen O’Toole.

Other members include Tipperary native Noeline Blackwell who is Chief Executive of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre and a former director of the Free Legal Advice Centre.

Noeline Blackwell started out as a solicitor in Tipperary in the mid-1970s.

Also included in the commission is former Irish Times editor Conor Brady and Sir Peter Fahy, a former Chief Constable in the UK.

The Tánaiste and Justice Minister says along with a final report, the commission may bring forward immediate and rolling recommendations it feels need to be implemented in the short term.

The root and branch review has extensive terms of reference, including looking at the culture and ethos of the Gardaí, recruitment and training, management structures and oversight, and whether there should be separation of policing and security in the State.
