IPAS centre planned for Thurles building

A planning exemption has been granted for the creation of an IPAS centre in Thurles.

Tipperary County Council has approved a ‘Section 5’ exemption for a company that want to renovate a former furniture shop on Mitchel Street.

It means the developers will be able to convert the building without going through the usual planning processes.

No contract has yet been signed with the Department of Integration but local Cllr Jim Ryan says it’s planned that there could be 80 asylum seekers housed there in the future.

He says these negotiations should not be allowed happen without talking to the local community first.
