€21 million has been allocated for maintenance and upgrading of Tipperary’s regional and local roads.

Transport Minister Shane Ross has also sanctioned an additional €2.3 million for special projects in the county.

Its part of a national fund of €417 million which the government says will allow around 2,300 kilometres of road to be resurfaced and 2,100 strengthened across the country.

While welcoming the allocation, Thurles based County Councillor Micheál Lowry says it’s not enough to tackle the roads problem in Tipperary.

However the independent representative says more funding is badly needed to tackle the growing problem of poor roads in Tipp.

Councillor Lowry says a call has to be made for emergency funding.
