The official opening of the Killaloe Bypass and Shannon Bridge Crossing will take place this afternoon.
The R494 Improvements Scheme will also be unveiled by Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien.
The multi-million Euro project has been in the pipeline for years with many roadblocks along the way.
The river crossing – which will be known as the Brian Boru Bridge – is seen as a huge boost for the twin towns of Ballina and Killaloe as it will ease the bottleneck which has hampered the area.
Cllr Phyll Bugler says the name of the new bridge ties the area to its history and descendants of the legendary High King of Ireland will be honoured at the opening ceremony.
The Ballina based local representative says there’s been a lot of work done to get to this point and but the sacrifices in terms of disruption over recent year have been worth it.
