Fears have been expressed that the initiative which is pilotted in a number of counties will result in staff reductions and a reduced personal service.

The aim of the service is to allow unmanned libraries to open later in the evenings and officials insist if it introduced, it will be an addition not a replacement.

Cashel Clr Martin Browne who raised the issue remains unconvinced – he says he's still worried that staff will eventually be replaced.

Cllr Browne has also expressed concern over anti-social behavior and damage being caused.

However Thurles representative John Hogan is welcoming the initiative and says he's been reassured that it will help offer a modern service.
