Tipp Councillor critical of Household Charge plans

A Tipperary Councillor claims that local authorities are being used as a pawn in what he describes as the household charge debacle.

Fianna Fail Councillor John Hogan has taken issue with Government plans to punish local authorities who don't chase payment.

As the debacle about the household charge rages on, the Government has now threatened to withdraw services and funding from Local Authorities who fail pull out the stops to collect the household charge.

North Tipp Councillor John Hogan has accused Phil Hogan, of trying to use Tipperary Councils as a scapegoat, for what he describes as a 'disaster, the campaign to wrangle 100 euro from each household.

He said the Government failed to give out the right information, did not give enough time and failed to implement better payment measures.

He says the Government need to hold their hands up, admit defeat and extend the deadline until September.

He also expressed concern about using Council employees to collect the charge, and said it wasn't what they signed up for.
