A new ‘tiny urban forest’ of over more than five-and-a-half-thousand native trees has been planted in Thurles.
It’s been done in partnership between the local authority and the 100 Million Trees Project which uses a Japanese method for growing the trees in small spaces.
Over 50 volunteers gathered on previously waste ground beside the Dun Mhuileann housing estate on the Mill Road to plant the trees.
Co-founder of the 100 MT Project Richard Mulcahy says it was a great opportunity:
“its fantastic use of the land, its brilliant for Biodiversity”
Groups from all three secondary schools in Thurles got involved in the planting along with the local Tidy Towns.
District Administrator Sharon Scully says it was important to have young people helping out with the digging
“Its great for the schools to be involved, they can come back in years to come and see this small forest has grown”
