The ending of production at the Greenvale Animal Feeds plant in Thurles has been described as a further erosion of the commercial production base in the town.

In a move to significantly reduce overheads Arrabawn Co-op will transfer production to their plant in Limerick.

Production in the Greenvale plant, which has a staff of 10, will continue until August,

Arrabawn say there will be some opportunities for redeployment to the Limerick plant.

There may also be redeployment options in other areas of the co-op's business.

Deputy Michael Lowry has described the decision as a huge blow to staff and the commercial base in Thurles.

He says its unrealistic to expect workers to commute to Limerick each day and has asked Arrabawn to consider a travel and subsistence allowance.
